Adam J. Biec, LMHC

I am the founder and owner of A.J.B. Counseling & Psychotherapy.

Graduate of Columbia University with a degree in Mental Health Counseling, I am a dedicated Anxiety Specialist and Family/Couples Counselor with a passion for patient-centric care. My personal experience with panic disorder has not only given me a unique insight into the complexities of anxiety, but also an unwavering empathy for those I help. I draw on a diverse toolkit - from surrender and acceptance techniques, environmental and interoceptive exposure therapies, to CBT and Paradoxical Intent interventions. These varied strategies help my patients conquer their panic and anxiety.

In the realm of couples and family therapy, my grounding is in the Functional Family Therapy model, which I practiced exclusively for two years. Since 2014, I have been applying this rich knowledge in my own practice, supporting families and couples as they navigate their relationships.

Recognizing the need for varied expertise in mental health care, I have been carefully building a team of exceptional therapists since 2015. Through a meticulous selection process that includes mock therapy sessions, I ensure that every therapist brings a unique, yet high-quality skill set to our practice. I am a trauma-informed therapist. I received my master's degree from NYU in Mental Health Counseling and Wellness. Prior to that, I obtained my master's degree at Loyola Marymount University in Education and Policy with a focus on Social Emotional Learning in Early Childhood Education during my Teach for America commitment.  I received my bachelor’s degree at NYU in an individualized study on The Implications of Trauma and Recovery and youth empowerment.  I have been working with children and others who have been impacted by tragedy, ever since I was a camp counselor for children who lost a parent on 9/11.  Shortly after, I worked with other teenagers impacted by war and terrorism and also helped start a camp for children who were impacted by the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting.

Inspired by my experience of losing my dad on 9/11, a lieutenant with the FDNY, I have dedicated my life to serving children, families, and adults who have gone through the unimaginable. I am also passionate about working with first responders and their families. As both a Teach for America Alumni and early childhood educator for 8 years, I am passionate about providing the best tools and support systems for our children to survive both inside and outside classroom spaces.  I have been an instrumental voice in speaking to the effects of resiliency in the face of trauma, through her work with the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, FDNY, Answer the Call, Tunnel to Towers, and various first responder organizations. I have been featured on NBC, CNN, Fox News, Huffington Post, and News 12.

My certifications include EMDR Basic Training with Dr. Karen Alter-Reid, EMDRIA approved, Radiant Human Meditation Practitioner with BodyAttune, Reiki 1&2 with BodyAttune, Yoga and Mindfulness facilitator for children/adolescents with Little Flower Yoga.

The decision to come to counseling is one that we make when we are in need of support and guidance and when the struggles of life may feel overwhelming or out of control. I would like to offer you a safe space to explore your uniqueness, thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in order to raise awareness of how you can achieve a higher level of wellness. I began my counseling career over 30 years ago in Manhattan and the Bronx with homeless children and families and in an alternative high school in Astoria, Queens while obtaining my Master’s in Guidance & Counseling from Hunter College. I then attended the Swedish Institute: NYC College of Health Science, obtained my license in Massage Therapy, and have had a private practice for 15 years.

I’ve worked treating anxiety, depression, disease, and physical and mental trauma, while also teaching guided meditation and meditative stretching. I have now also obtained an Advance Master’s Certificate in Mental Health Counseling from the University at Buffalo. Clinically, I have worked with all ages, couples and families struggling with a wide variety of mental health concerns, addiction, personality disorders, and eating disorders. I use CBT, awareness raising, mindfulness, and client centered techniques. I offer compassion, honesty, respect, encouragement, and assistance in identifying healthy solutions.

Every counselor's journey begins with a purpose, and mine is rooted in the trials that brought me here. Today, my focus is the mission—helping others grow and heal. Our mental health needs change as we reflect, understand ourselves better, and evolve. Like athletes, musicians, or artists, we too need consistent practice to grow into the best version of ourselves. That's how I see therapy: a lifelong practice of unlocking new possibilities and healing from past scars.

Beyond my counseling credentials, I hold an MBA and have spent the past decade in management and the entertainment industry. As a husband and father of three, I deeply value relationships and understand the profound impact they have on our lives. My goal is to offer a therapeutic space that is welcoming, where you can find the guidance you need to move forward, heal, and grow.
